A Quick Nap Can Make All the Difference

Dr. Jean Bowman travelled up to Boston to join scientist, physicians and health officials from all over the world.  The goal was to discuss development of a vaccine for HIV-1. The meeting hall buzzed with scientific discussion as everyone gathered. The scientist and physicians were joined by a number of Health Minister to discuss public policy associated with vaccine delivery and to assure that everyone in the world have equal access to vaccines.

As scientists took the stage to present their groundbreaking vaccine data, the audience was captivated, hanging on to every word.

However, as Jean gave her presentation, a gentle snoring sound began to emanate from the direction of a particular Health Minister. The snoring grew louder, drawing amused glances from the attendees. Unfazed, Jean continued her presentation.

As fate would have it, the Health Minister’s chair teetered precariously on the edge of balance. Suddenly, with a resounding crash, the minister tumbled backward, chair and all, landing on the floor in a spectacular display of unintended acrobatics. The room erupted into a mix of gasps.

Without missing a beat, Jean seized the opportunity to inject a bit of humor into the situation. She quipped, “Well, it seems my presentation is quite a knockout! Perhaps I should consider a career in stand-up comedy as well?” The room erupted in laughter, and even the Health Minister, now wide awake and slightly embarrassed, joined in the mirth.

It served as a reminder that even in the serious world of science and health, a good laugh is sometimes the best medicine.
